Vøringsfossen and the new facility at Fossatromma to open on 18 September
After 30 years of planning and developing Norwegian Scenic Routes, the NPRA is now completing the third stage of the tourism icon of Vøringsfossen.
Vøringsfossen is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Norway. Vast quantities of water here plunge 182 metres down from the Hardangervidda plateau to the Måbødalen valley.
Having developed the Vøringsfossen destination in two previous construction stages, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) is completing the attraction this year with a large car park with EV charging facilities, public toilets, viewpoints and landscaping work at Fossatromma.
Visitors will now be able to experience the Vøringsfossen waterfall and the Måbødalen valley from new perspectives, and the lower plateau at Fossatromma will now be accessible from the upper area at Fossli via the spectacular step bridge over the river Bjoreio and the old pack road.
In 2009, architect Carl Viggo Hølmebakk won a design competition for Vøringsfossen. In 2015, the first stage of the construction project was started at Fossli with paths, toilets, parking and several viewpoints towards the waterfall and the valley.
The second stage with the step bridge over the waterfall between Fossli and Fossatromma was opened in 2020, and has attracted international attention. The third stage with the facilities at Fossatromma will now have its official opening in September 2024.
The entire facility consists of more than one kilometre of well-secured paths, a number of spectacular viewpoints, large and small bridges, two service buildings and spacious parking areas, one with charging facilities for electric cars.
