Liasanden rest area reopens on 27 June
The Liasanden rest area on Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet is reopening – now upgraded for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians.
The atmospheric Liasanden rest area on Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet is reopening in new bike-friendly splendour. New outdoor areas with seating groups, improved facilities for cyclists and a car-free area make up the new environmental profile of the rest area. Minister of Transport and Communications Jon-Ivar Nygård will be performing the grand opening.
This quiet, sheltered rest area in the forest at Liasand was the first rest area to be completed along Norwegian Scenic Routes in 1997. After 27 years with many visitors and a lot of traffic, Liasanden was rather rundown and had sustained damage to roots and undergrowth. The rest area was therefore ready for a makeover.
The upgraded rest area now has new wooden benches and two roofed shelters that offer protection from wind and weather; which has been a recurrent request from cyclists. The original architect-designed toilets from 1997 will be upgraded but maintain their original design as monuments of time.
As an environmental protection measure, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) has closed the forest to car traffic, referring visitors to the communal parking on the east side. From there, travellers can easily walk into the recreation area.
Newly established vegetation will still be fragile and it may be necessary to cordon off some areas throughout this season.
